Our Mission
The Northwoods Humane Society is dedicated to providing a safe, sheltered environment for animals in need while working tirelessly to find them their perfect, permanent homes. We are committed to nurturing, socializing, and training every animal to ensure their successful transition into a loving family.
Our Story
Our journey began in 1987 as an unsheltered foster care organization, evolving over the years through the dedication of our community. Since opening our dedicated shelter in 1994 on 87 acres near Hayward, Wisconsin, we have grown into a vital resource that serves 650 to 700 animals annually. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, we rely entirely on the generosity of supporters, as we receive no government funding.
How We Care
We are proud to operate as a no-kill shelter, where each animal receives comprehensive veterinary care, including spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and temperament testing. Our team of staff and volunteers provides personalized attention, whether an animal stays with us for a few days or several months. From cozy indoor cat rooms to our outdoor walking trails and dog parks, we strive to create a calm, healthy, and compassionate space for every resident.
