Columbia County Humane Society
Our Mission
The Columbia County Humane Society is dedicated to ensuring the protection, sheltering, and welfare of all animals in and around our community through a collaborative effort with our citizens.
Our Story
We have been serving our community since 1925, when we were first incorporated to meet the growing need to care for unwanted and abandoned animals. Today, we continue this long-standing tradition of compassion from our dedicated shelter facility on Industrial Road in Portage, which has been serving local pets since 1998.
How We Care
Each year, our team provides essential care and support to approximately 1,300 animals, including strays, owner-surrenders, and transfers. Our shelter provides a safe, welcoming environment where every animal receives immediate care and attention as they await their new beginning. We are proud to be a community hub for animal wellness, offering everything from adoption services to specialized programs like Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) for feral cats.
Finding Your Perfect Match
We believe in creating lifelong partnerships between pets and people. By reviewing applications carefully and conducting thoughtful appointments, we help you find the companion that best fits your household and lifestyle. We even encourage you to bring your current dogs for a meet and greet to ensure that every new addition is a happy, harmonious fit for your family.
