Our Mission

The Humane Society of Burnett County (HSBC) is dedicated to providing a safe haven for stray or unwanted animals, fostering the human-animal bond, promoting responsible pet ownership, and ending pet overpopulation through spay/neuter initiatives. We believe in our core values of rescue, reunite, rehome, and rethink to ensure every animal gets the best care possible.

Our Journey

Founded in November 2000, our organization initially focused on sheltering stray dogs within a network of foster homes. Thanks to the generosity of our community and the late Hugh Schilling, Jr., we opened our current facility, the Peggy Schilling Animal Adoption & Education Center, in 2019 to better serve animals in need.

How We Care

We operate a professional shelter environment where our team—ranging from kennel technicians to administrative staff—provides daily care and enrichment for our residents. Beyond our physical center, we rely on the selflessness of foster families to offer temporary homes, which can make all the difference while an animal waits to find their forever family.

10/5 - 🍦🐾 A SWEET THANK YOU TO SIREN DAIRY QUEEN! 🐾🍦 Today we decided our shelter pups deserved a little extra treat, so we called up the Siren Dairy Queen! With DQ being under new ownership, we weren’t sure how our request for some pup cups would go… but we definitely didn’t expect THIS. 🥹❤️ After speaking with the new owner, they generously supplied EVERY SINGLE DOG in our shelter with a FREE pup cup! 🐶🍦 The staff didn’t hesitate for a second. They immediately got them made, didn’t charge us a thing, and were genuinely just happy to do something special for some four-legged friends who could use a little extra happiness while they wait for their forever homes. And judging by the video… the pups were VERY appreciative. 😂❤️ Community relationships like this mean so much to us. Sometimes something as simple as a pup cup can give a stressed shelter dog a few minutes of pure joy — and knowing local businesses are willing to support the animals in our care means more than we can say. We also know that changes in business ownership can be a big transition, so we’d love for our community to help us return the kindness!
