Adopting a dog is one of the most rewarding decisions a family can make, but it works best when everyone knows what they're signing up for. Before you fill out an application, take a moment to think through a few practical questions.
First, how much time can you realistically give each day? A young, high-energy dog needs exercise and training; a senior dog may be happy with short walks and a warm lap.
Second, what's your living situation — space, stairs, a yard, other pets?
Third, what's your budget for food, vet care, and the occasional surprise? Fourth, who is the backup caregiver when you travel? And fifth, are you prepared for an adjustment period while your new dog decompresses and learns to trust you?
If you can answer these honestly, you're already ahead. The shelter staff would rather help you find the right dog than the fastest one.
