A newly adopted cat isn't being aloof — they're overwhelmed. The single best thing you can do is start small. Set up one quiet "safe room" with food, water, a litter box, and a hiding spot before you even bring them home.
For the first day or two, let your cat stay in that room and come to you. Sit on the floor, talk softly, and don't force contact. By mid-week, most cats begin to explore and may start seeking attention on their own terms. Introduce the rest of
the house gradually, one room at a time, and keep the safe room available as a retreat.
By the end of the week, you'll usually see the real personality start to emerge. Patience in these first seven days pays off with years of trust.
